🧂5 Steps to Prepping Your Blackstone Grill Before Cooking the First Meal

We finally did it—we joined the Blackstone club! 🎉And just like any new member of a "grill cult," we were equal parts excited and totally clueless.

The first thing we learned? Before you can griddle up diner-style breakfasts and smashburgers like a pro, you have to season your Blackstone.

I’ll admit—we had no idea what we were doing. But if we can figure it out between carpool and cleaning up dog hair, you can too.

🛠️ What Is “Seasoning” and Why Does It Matter?

Seasoning your Blackstone is like giving it a protective, non-stick superpower. You’re building a slick, dark coating of oil that:

  • ✅ Prevents rust

  • ✅ Creates a naturally non-stick surface

  • ✅ Adds flavor to your food

  • ✅ Makes cleanup 100x easier

And yes—it's basically like skincare for your grill. 😉

🧽 Step-by-Step: How We Seasoned Ours (Imperfectly, But It Worked)

Here’s the mom-tested, real-life version of how we did it:

1. Fire it up

Turn on your burners to high. Let the surface heat up until it changes color a bit. (Ours went from silver to brownish quickly.)

2. Apply a thin layer of oil

We used the Blackstone Griddle Seasoning and Cast Iron Conditioner but others use flaxseed, canola or vegetable oil. The key is thin. We wiped it around with a blue shop towels using tongs. Make sure not to use regular paper towels - they tend to stick to the grill. Don't pour too much—you’re not frying chicken.

3. Let it smoke

This part is fun (and a little dramatic). The grill will start to smoke like crazy. That’s normal! Once the smoke stops—your first layer is set.

4. Repeat 3–5 times

We did 4 rounds. Each layer gets darker, and you’ll see the surface go from dull to shiny black. Cut up a bag of onions and throw them on the grill. The caramelization of the onions will help to break in the iron.

5. Cool down and admire your work

It felt like we’d just earned a backyard badge of honor. 🔥

🧡 Why It Was Worth It

We felt like total pros after the first cook. Eggs didn’t stick. Burgers seared beautifully. And clean-up? A breeze.

It wasn’t perfect. We used too much oil once, didn’t wait long enough for the smoke another time—but it still worked.

That’s kind of how mom life goes, right? Imperfect, but full of effort and love.

🔗 Thinking of Getting a Blackstone?

We’re hooked. It’s our new favorite way to cook as a family.

Pro Tip from One Busy Mom to Another:

Let it be a family thing. Get the kids involved. Make it a weekend ritual. And give yourself grace—seasoning takes time, just like parenting.

Love,

Johanna
